What is Project Management?
Project Management, two words that can sometimes bring even the strongest business owner to their knees. It is only two words but manifests so many misconceptions, so let’s quickly simplify it...
An undertaking to get you from where you are now to where you want to be e.g. you want to increase sales of a particular product or develop a new product or simply go on holiday in 6 months time.
These would all be projects because you have a starting point and the project would be the activities you need to undertake in order to get to where you have decided you want to be.
The act of managing a process or undertaking and the people involved in order to follow through on a plan to produce something. This could be a formal project team or a group of individuals that are simply being told do this then do this. Someone needs to manage this to ensure success.
Project management at its heart is common sense, you define where you want to be, make sure you understand where you are now and then create an environment that contains all the steps you have to take to get from A to B. It is not rocket science but it is much easier if you understand some of the core elements.
Things like planning, communication, work breakdown, product breakdown, risk management, dealing with change and many more.
